A Binary MLM plan places each distributor at the top of two legs — a left leg and a right leg. Every new member is placed under one of these two legs, either directly or through spillover. The tree grows infinitely deep on both sides.

The pairing bonus is calculated when both legs accumulate equal Business Volume (BV). When the weaker leg matches the stronger leg at a defined BV threshold, a pairing bonus is triggered (typically 10–15% of the matched BV). Unmatched BV is carried forward to the next cycle.

For example: Left leg = 500 BV, Right leg = 400 BV. The system pairs 400 BV × 10% = $40 pairing bonus. 100 BV carries forward in the left leg.

MLM Software Glossary

Key terms and definitions every MLM business owner should know.

Business Volume (BV)
A point value assigned to each product or service in an MLM company, used to calculate commission eligibility and rank qualification. BV may differ from the actual retail price.
Personal Volume (PV)
The BV generated by a distributor's own purchases and personal retail sales (not including downline volume). Often required as a minimum monthly maintenance requirement to stay commission-qualified.
Genealogy Tree
The hierarchical visualization of a distributor's entire downline network — showing who sponsored whom and the organizational structure of the team at all levels.
Spillover
In binary or matrix plans, when a distributor's direct position is full, new recruits are placed ("spill over") into available positions below them in the tree — benefiting the distributor placed above the spillover position.
Breakaway
When a downline distributor achieves a defined leadership rank, they "break away" from their upline's group to form an independent unit. The original upline then earns override commissions on the broken-away leader's entire group volume.
Commission Cap
A maximum payout limit applied to a specific bonus type within a given period (daily, weekly, or monthly). Caps prevent runaway commission liabilities and ensure long-term company sustainability.
Rank Compression
In stairstep plans, when a distributor between you and your downline fails to qualify for their rank, the system skips over them so you earn the commission differential as if they were not there.
Binary Flush / BV Flush
The clearing of accumulated BV from both legs of a binary plan after a pairing cycle. Some plans retain carry-forward BV on the stronger leg; others flush both legs at cycle end.
Matrix Width & Depth
The two dimensions of a matrix plan. Width = number of positions in each row; Depth = number of levels. A 3×5 matrix has 3 positions per level across 5 levels deep = 363 total positions.
Autoship / AutoOrder
Automatic recurring monthly product orders placed by distributors to maintain active status and commission eligibility. The system auto-processes payment and ships product at a set date each month.
FIFO Queue (Monoline)
First In, First Out — the queue management principle in monoline/single-line MLM plans. Members who joined earliest are placed closest to the front of the payout queue and cycle out first.
Override Commission
A percentage commission earned by a senior leader on the total group volume of a breakaway leader or generation group — replacing the direct level commissions they would have earned before the breakaway event.
